At times we become confused, thinking and acting as though our own opinions and preferences supersede the Word of God. Plainly, our flesh will always want what our flesh wants. It will always be ready to respond to situations and circumstances in ways that are in direct conflict with the standard and moral code that has been left for us in the Bible. We want to make our own rules and go our own ways; think for ourselves…be “free.” This sounds nice, but is it really free? If everyone under the sun decided to do just as they pleased at all times, with no standard of morality and no rules, where would we be? Who sets the standard? If not God, then who?
Naturally, we desire to be disobedient.
Biblical obedience refers to the act of willingly and faithfully conforming one’s actions, thoughts, and attitudes to the commands, principles, and teachings found in the Bible. It involves a heartfelt submission to God’s authority, acknowledging His sovereignty, and aligning one’s life with the moral and spiritual guidance provided in the Scriptures. Biblical obedience is motivated by love, reverence, and a desire to follow God’s will, seeking to live a life that reflects the values and teachings outlined in the Bible.
“If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15, NIV)
This verse highlights the connection between love for God and obedience to His commands, emphasizing the idea that true love for God naturally results in a life characterized by adherence to His teachings.
Our opinions do not give us the right to disobey the Word of God because the authority of God’s Word transcends human preferences and perspectives. The Bible serves as the ultimate standard for truth and morality, and our opinions should align with its teachings.
In Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV), it is emphasized:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
This verse highlights the distinction between God’s divine wisdom and human understanding. Therefore, our opinions should yield to the authority of God’s Word, acknowledging His higher wisdom and moral guidance. Obey.
