Take Up Your Cross

Lyrics

Take Up Your Cross Christian Song

Take Up Your Cross

Verse 1
Take up your cross
I hear Him say
Lay down your will
Let the world fall away
Deny yourself
And follow close
The narrow road
Is the way He goes

Chorus
Take up your cross
Follow Him
There’s no other way
To truly live
Take up your cross
Day by day
Lose your life
And you’ll find your way

Verse 2
When the weight feels more
Than you can stand
His strength will steady
Your trembling hands
Don’t fear shame
Don’t feed pride
He bore it all
On the other side

Verse 3
He carried mine
So I’ll carry His
Love like this
Is heaven-sent
Through the pain
Through the cost
Life is found
In the cross

Scripture Focus

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.’”
— Matthew 16:24 (CSB)

Jesus never hid the cost of discipleship.

He did not call people to comfort, applause, or a faith shaped by personal preference. He called them to deny themselves, take up the cross, and follow Him. That kind of calling confronts everything in us that wants control, ease, and self-rule. Yet it is not a cruel call. It is a loving one. The One who tells us to take up our cross is the same One who first carried His.

Take Up Your Cross is rooted in that tension. Following Christ means laying down our own will, rejecting pride, and walking the narrow road even when it costs us something. But the song also reminds us that we do not walk that road alone. The Savior who calls us is the Savior who strengthens trembling hands. He bore shame, suffering, and death for His people, and because of Him, the cross is no longer the end of the story. In Christ, death to self is the path to life.

This song is a reminder that discipleship is daily. It is not a one-time emotional moment, but a continual surrender. To take up the cross is to trust that Jesus is worth more than this world, more than self, and more than anything we are asked to leave behind. And in losing our lives for His sake, we do not lose what matters most. We find it in Him.

Reflection

What are you still trying to hold onto that Christ is calling you to lay down?

Have you treated following Jesus as something convenient, or as a call to daily surrender?

What would it look like today to deny yourself, follow closely, and trust that life is truly found in the cross?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling us to follow You in truth. Teach us to deny ourselves, lay down our own will, and walk the narrow road with faithfulness. When the cost feels heavy, strengthen our hearts and steady our hands. Guard us from pride, fear, and the love of this world. Help us remember that true life is not found in self, but in surrender to You. Amen.
