What is Tithing?

Note: Everything belongs to God. Everything.

The 10% tithe originated in the Old Testament of the Bible. In Greek, the word tithe means “a tenth part.” Abraham tithed (a tenth) of the recovered goods to Melchizedek in Genesis 14, before the Law of Moses was established. Tithing later became part of the Mosaic Law.

Old Testament Tithing: Taking Care of the Levitical Priests and the Poor

The gist: This wasn’t about money. It was for the other 11 tribes to support the Levites, who were in charge of managing and maintaining the temple of God.

Tithing, as referenced in the specified Old Testament Bible verses, involves the practice of giving a tenth, or 10%, of one’s income or resources to God. Leviticus 27:30 states the general principle of tithing, Numbers 18:26 outlines the tithe as a contribution to the Levites who served in the tabernacle, Deuteronomy 14:22 emphasizes tithing on agricultural produce and livestock, and 2 Chronicles 31:5 illustrates the faithful presentation of tithes to support the priests and maintain the temple. Tithing is a way for believers to express gratitude, trust, and obedience to God by acknowledging His provision and supporting the work of the religious community and the poor.

Deuteronomy 26:12 further emphasizes the purpose of tithing, highlighting that it extends beyond a mere obligation. This verse encourages believers to share their tithes with those in need, including foreigners, orphans, and widows, demonstrating a compassionate and benevolent aspect of tithing as a means of caring for the less fortunate in the community.

New Testament: Giving Under Grace

We are not currently under the law, but under grace. Jesus’ death and resurrection fulfilled the law. The New Testament does not require that we “tithe” a tenth, specifically. We are not saved by works, but by grace and faith in Jesus.

”What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.“ Matthew 23:23 NLT

Our works, such as tithing, do nothing to earn or maintain salvation. However, works are a product of faith. So, we give willingly from our hearts.

Galatians 3 explains that by relying on works, failure to obey just one of the 600+ laws is the same as breaking them all.

In 1 Corinthians 16:2, Paul encouraged the people to give to the Jerusalem church according to how they were prospering.

Generosity is Encouraged

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 NIV

As we give, let’s listen to the Holy Spirit and be mindful of how God has blessed us. Whether we give more or less than 10%, the key is finding joy in being generous. Giving is a blessing in itself. So, let’s pray and ask God for wisdom in our giving. By doing so, we reflect God’s love and compassion in practical ways. May our giving be a clear expression of the love we’ve received, following Jesus’ teachings to care for one another and help those in need.
